Mary Nuyens’ Molasses Sugar Cookies

~4 DOZEN COOKIES  |  COOK TIME: 8-10 MIN  |  PREHEAT: 375°

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup shortening OR ½ cup shortening + ¼ cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ¼ cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 cups sifted all purpose flour
  • ½ tsp cloves
  • ½ tsp ginger
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp salt

Directions

  1. Melt shortening in 3 or 4 quart sauce pan over low heat.
  2. Remove from heat and let cool.
  3. Add sugar, molasses, and egg. Beat well.
  4. Sift together flour, soda, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, and salt.
  5. Add dry ingredients to first mixture and mix well.
  6. Chill
  7. Form 1-inch balls and roll in granulated sugar.
  8. Place on greased cookie sheets two inches apart.
  9. Bake at 375° for 8-10 minutes

Notes

From Christine: I substitute ¾ cup vegetable oil for the shortening (aka Crisco). Grandma always had a big can of Crisco and I don’t have it, so the vegetable oil substitutes for the shortening and there is no melting. I don’t use butter.
